Atthesametimeawhirlwindofirresistiblefuryhowledthroughthelonghall,boretheunfortunatehorse-jockeyclearoutofthemouthofthecavern,andprecipitatedhimoverasteep,bankofloosestones,wheretheshepherdsfoundhimthenextmorning,withjustbreathsufficienttotellhisfearfultale,afterconcludingwhichheexpired。

Thislegend,withseveralvariations,isfoundinmanypartsofScotlandandEngland-thesceneissometimeslaidinsomefavouriteglenoftheHighlands,sometimesinthedeepcoal-minesofNorthumberlandandCumberland,whichrunsofarbeneaththeocean。ItisalsotobefoundinReginaldScott’sbookonWitchcraft,whichwaswritteninthesixteenthcentury。Itwouldbeinvaintoaskwhatwastheoriginalofthetradition。

Thechoicebetweenthehornandswordmay,perhaps,includeasamoral,thatitisfool-hardytoawakendangerbeforewehavearmsinourhandstoresistit。

Althoughadmittingofmuchpoeticalornament,itisclearthatthislegendwouldhaveformedbutanunhappyfoundationforaprosestory,andmusthavedegeneratedintoamerefairytale。Dr。JohnLeydenhasbeautifullyintroducedthetraditioninhisScenesofInfancy:-
