MarkTwainmusthavebeentoobusytowritelettersthatwinter。

Thosethathavesurvivedarefewandunimportant。Asamatteroffact,hewaswritingtheplay,“AhSin,“withBretHarte,andgettingitreadyforproduction。HartewasaguestintheClemenshomewhiletheplaywasbeingwritten,andnotalwaysapleasantone。Hewasfullofrequirements,criticalastothe”menage”tothepointofsarcasm。ThelongfriendshipbetweenClemensandHarteweakenedunderthestrainofcollaborationandintimatedailyintercourse,nevertorenewitsoldfiber。Itwasanunhappyoutcomeofanenterprisewhichinitselfwastoproveoflittleprofit。Theplay,“AhSin,“hadmanygoodfeatures,andwithCharlesT。ParsloeinanamusingChinesepartmighthavebeenmadeasuccess,ifthetwoauthorscouldhaveharmoniouslyundertakentheneededrepairs。ItopenedinWashingtoninMay,andaletterfromParsloe,writtenatthemoment,givesahintofthesituation。

HehadbeggedHowellstogowiththem,butHowells,asusual,wasfullofliteraryaffairs。TwichellandClemensspentfourgloriousdaystrampingthelengthandbreadthofthebeautifulisland,andremembereditalwaysasoneoftheirhappiestadventures。“PutitdownasanOasis!“wroteTwichellonhisreturn,“I”mafraidIshallnotseeasgreenaspotagainsoon。Anditwasyourinventionandyourgift。Andyourcompanywasthebestofit。Indeed,Inevertookmorecomfortinbeingwithyouthanonthisjourney,which,myboy,issayingagreatdeal。”

ThespeechwasmadeatJohnGreenleafWhittier”sseventiethbirthdaydinner,givenbytheAtlanticstaffontheeveningofDecember17,1877。Itwasintendedasahugejoke——ajokethatwouldshakethesidesofthesevenerableBostondeities,Longfellow,Emerson,Holmes,andtherestofthatveneratedgroup。ClemenshadbeenafavoriteattheAtlanticlunchesanddinners——aspeechbyhimalwaysanevent。Thistimehedecidedtooutdohimself。

Hedidthat,butnotinthewayhehadintended。Touseoneofhisownmetaphors,hesteppedouttomeettherainbowandgotstruckbylightning。HisjokewasnotoftheBostonkindorsize。Whenitsfullnatureburstuponthecompany——whentheearsoftheassembleddinersheardthesacrednamesofLongfellow,Emerson,andHolmeslightlyassociatedwithhumanaspectsremoved——oh,veryfarremoved——fromCambridgeandConcord,achillfelluponthedinersthatpresentlybecameamazement,andthencreepingparalysis。Nobodyknewafterwardwhetherthegreatspeechthathehadsogailyplannedevercametoanaturalendornot。Somebody——thenextontheprogram——attemptedtofollowhim,butpresentlythecompanymeltedoutofthedoorsandcreptawayintothenight。
