hewasinhighfeather,andduringavisittoEnglandwasfetedasasortofromanticconqueroroftheoldentime。Perhapsthisturnedhishead;atalleventsattheendof1895camethestartlingnewsthat“Dr。Jim,“ashewascalled,attheheadofsixhundredmen,hadriddenintotheTransvaalinsupportofaRhodesschemeforanuprisingatJohannesburg。Theraidwasafailure。Jameson,andthoseotherknightsofadventure,werecapturedbytheforcesof“OomPaul,“andsomeofthembarelyescapedexecution。TheBoerpresidenthandedthemovertotheEnglishGovernmentforpunishment,andtheyreceivedvaryingsentences,butallwereeventuallyreleased。Jameson,later,becameagainprominentinSouth-Africanpolitics,butthereisnorecordofanyfurtherraids……

TheClemenspartysailedfromSouthAfricathemiddleofJuly,1896,andonthelastdayofthemonthreachedEngland。TheyhadnotplannedtoreturntoAmerica,buttospendthewinterinornearLondoninsomequietplacewhereClemenscouldwritethebookofhistravels。

ThetwodaughtersinAmerica,SusyandJean,wereexpectedtoarriveAugust12th,butonthatdaytherecame,instead,alettersayingthatSusyClemenswasnotwellenoughtosail。Acableinquirywasimmediatelysent,butthereplywhenitcamewasnotsatisfactory,andMrs。ClemensandClarasailedforAmericawithoutfurtherdelay。
