CertainlyChichikovwasathoroughcoward,for,althoughthebritchkapursueditsheadlongcourseuntilNozdrev"sestablishmenthaddisappearedbehindhillocksandhedgerows,ourherocontinuedtoglancenervouslybehindhim,asthougheverymomentexpectingtoseeasternchasebegin。Hisbreathcamewithdifficulty,andwhenhetriedhisheartwithhishandshecouldfeelitflutteringlikeaquailcaughtinanet。

“Whatasweatthefellowhasthrownmeinto!”hethoughttohimself,whilemanyadireandforcefulaspirationpassedthroughhismind。
