andIcouldhearsparrowschirpinginthegarden,andmysprightlycousinalreadybangingthepianoandpouringforthanacidstreamofsongfromthedrawing-roomoverhead。

Ay,therewasthequestion。Withtwothousandpounds——fiftythousandfrancs——ImightreturntoParisandthearts,andbeaprinceandmillionaireinthatthriftyLatinQuarter。IthinkI

TherestofmybusinessinEdinburgh,nottodwellonaveryagreeabledinnerwiththelawyerorthehorrorsofthefamilyluncheon,tooktheformofanexcursionwiththestonemason,wholedmethistimetonosuburborworkofhisoldhands,butwithanimpulsebothnaturalandpretty,tothatmoreenduringhomewhichhehadchosenforhisclay。Itwasinacemetery,bysomestrangechance,immuredwithinthebulwarksofaprison;standing,besides,onthemarginofacliff,crowdedwithelderlystonememorials,andgreenwithturfandivy。Theeastwind(whichIthoughttooharshfortheoldman)
