WhenthenewsoftheBishop"sunfortunatecollisionswiththenatives,andofhisuntimelyend,reachedEngland,muchblamewasimputedtohim。Thepolicy,whichwiththeformalsanctionofallhiscompanionshehadadopted,beingdirectlycontrarytotheadvicewhichDr。Livingstonetendered,andtotheassurancesofthepeaceablenatureoftheMissionwhichtheDoctorhadgiventothenatives,afriendlydisapprovalofabishop"sengaginginwarwasventuredon,whenwemethimatChibisa"sinNovember。ButwhenwefoundhisconductregardedwithsomuchbitternessinEngland,whetherfromadispositionto"standbythedownman,"orfromhavinganintimateknowledgeofthepeculiarcircumstancesofthecountryinwhichhewasplaced,orfromthethoroughconfidencewhichintimacycausedustoreposeinhisgenuinepiety,anddevoutserviceofGod,wecametothinkmuchmorelenientlyofhisproceedings,thanhisassailantsdid。Heneverseemedtodoubtbutthathehaddonehisduty;andthroughouthehadalwaysbeensupportedbyhisassociates。
