Weknowitbyvariousevidences;andoneofthemis,thatforagestheracehasrespected(andalmostvenerated)thephysician”sgrotesquesystem——theemptyingofmiscellaneousandharmfuldrugsintoaperson”sstomachtoremoveailmentswhichinmanycasesthedrugscouldnotreachatall;inmanycasescouldreachandhelp,butonlyatcostofdamagetosomeotherpartoftheman;andintheremainderofthecasesthedrugeitherretardedthecure,orthediseasewascuredbynatureinspiteofthenostrums。Thedoctor”sinsanesystemhasnotonlybeenpermittedtocontinueitsfolliesforages,buthasbeenprotectedbytheStateandmadeaclosemonopoly——aninfamousthing,acrimeagainstafree-man”sproperrighttochoosehisownassassinorhisownmethodofdefendinghisbodyagainstdiseaseanddeath。

Seewhatapowerfulholdourancientsuperstitionshaveuponus:twoweeksago,whenLivycommittedanincredibleimprudenceandbyconsequencewaspromptlystrickendownwithaheavytripleattack——
